Tackling the Kitchen Gadget Monster Drawer.
On New Years Eve... I was hosting a family party at my home.
My Mother asked me where a serving spoon was... and I opened my drawer to this.
We all should have screamed in horror!!!
How could I have such a mess??
Clearly... I had neglected some of my kitchen space.
How does an Organizer let something like this happen??
I will blame it on grief... but I honestly have no idea.
I am just as shocked as the rest of you.
I couldn't have a drawer like this!!!!
I went to work ASAP.
As I emptied every drawer and cupboard in the kitchen.. I also found three rolling pins.
WHAT IN THE ??????????
Have I been living in my house??
I only use one rolling pin maybe 5-10 times a year.
I am not a master baker.. or fancy chef...so why would I need three???
I went on a De-junking spree!
We are going to play a game.
The game is called what are each of these utensils.
What are they even used for?
And why on earth would I hold onto these when I don't know what they are?
Epic Fail.
After De-junking... I sent my pile of crap Utensils to the Thrift store.
BYE, BYE!!
I will not miss your cluttered-mess!
Hello Happy Drawer Organization.
After De-junking.. put everything you are keeping into groups that they go in.
example: Serving spoons, Tongs, Spatula's, Measuring cups.. etc.
Next... measure your space.
I needed to keep most of my serving spoons and tongs because I host so many parties.. and we use them often. If I didn't.... I would have tossed out much more.
Notice I even made room on the side for one rolling pin.
I am using up every bit of my kitchen space because I have so little.
Next... make sure that the drawer is functional.
The things you use most in the front.. to grab quickly.. and the tray in the back is the stuff we only use every once in a while.
We use spatulas every single day.
So.. I gave them their very own easy-to-grab-space where the once in a while rolling pins were once tragically housed.
They are HAPPY there.
My husband was pleased.
The second drawer that "housed" my stuff wasn't so unorganized.. but when I did the other drawer.. I wanted them to match.. because I am OCD like that.
Does anyone else LOVE the old vintage measuring cups like I have?
LOVE that they have a 3/4 and 2/3 cup.
Once again I arranged space for the most used measuring spoons in the front.. and then made order of importance as I went to the back of the drawer.
It has been a good experience for me to have to make good use of the little space I have in my kitchen.. but man... I do have plans.. and organizing dreams for when we remodel our kitchen.
Until then... I organize for the space I have!
The other 3 most popular ways to organize kitchen gadgets are:
(1)
Hanging on Hooks
I can see this being functional for some families.. but it would not be for mine.
Hooks are not so easy to put away as they look.
All 3 of my children put away the dishes.. and this would be a "task" in itsself.
Remember... good organization is easy to retrieve.. and put away.
So... I question if it's really so functional.. even though it's eye candy.
Each person, living situation and home is unique.
You can always try something.. and if it doesn't work... change it to make it work!
(2)
Magnetic Strips
While this may be functional for a few... this scares me way too much.
Maybe it's because I have seen too many horror movies.. and this is very easy access for a serial killer...
or maybe it's the Mommy in me that is terrified that my wide-eyed children will find this wall decor to be all too appealing...
I could even see my children thinking it would be a "fun" game to throw it at the board and watch it stick.
Yikes!!
I shudder as I think about it.
but I personally give it a low score on safety.
(3)
Putting it out in containers on your counter tops.
While I do have one container that houses a few of my "quick grab" utensils.. it is far away from the oven and sink to avoid grease spatter and germy things splashing on them.
It is functional.. but it can collect dust... and too many containers can become a cluttered mess on your counter top.
Choose the Best for your family.
Think "Functional" in everything you do in making space in your home.

I have some openings for Enrichment classes for February and a few in March.
I will travel most area's in Utah within an hour of where I live.
And they are free!!!
Happy De-junking and Organizing!!

NOW...I need to measure my drawers, and go to the $ store so I can get things more organized like you.
I LOVE organization.
My only trouble would be GETTING?TEACHING..my husband to put them BACK in their proper container.
sheeeesh
I have NO IDEA what those 3 kitchen gadgets are ...looks like hair pix's
to me.
LOL. The drawer looked like all drawers in my kitchen, I was like "what's the problem?" Haha. But your example of what to do with it would make life easier. :) I just don't see the possibilities like that. I really need to de-junk my entire house and garage. Just throw out LOTS of stuff and organize the rest. So overwhelming. When/how do you find the time?
The only reason I didn't shout in horror was because my utensil drawer look worse. It's become kind of a game now - how fast can someone find what they are looking for
I need to organize my kitchen gadgets. Thanks for the boost.
Wendy- Families can be taught or trained.. I promise. :)
Coco- Baby steps is how you start. One drawer at a time. I can come over and help if you need it.
M-Cat- You crack me up.
Ummm...I know what all 3 of those items are...a garnishing tool/slicer, a corn cob stripper, and a spatula/scraper for a grill(like a George Foreman grill)...
Do I win a prize???
I also have those exact same yellow measuring cups!
I don't really like the layout of my kitchen...My drawers are organized similar to yours (yay!) but not everything is as handy as I would like.
And I ams still working on training my kids to put things away where they go...I didn't know it would be so difficult for them to figure out!!!
Great organizing tips! How are you with unpacking??? ;)
Valerie!! You really know your kitchen stuff. Winner!! I will send you a prize! ♥
Even though you told me what they are.. I am curious to how they work! I may have to google it.
~ And I don't even own a George Forman grill.. ha!
Woohoo, you've earned the new title of the most fantastic De~Junkin' Queen!!! What a fabulous job!
Number one is a guess:
A utensil to cut rippled potatoes or carrots?
The second one I know:
Ya strip an ear of corn with it in one swift swoop.
Positive about number three:
A spatula for a George Foreman grill.
Now...what do I win! Heeehehhe!
God bless ya and have a spectacular day sweetie!!!
Ooh, I was gonna tell you what your gadgets were, but it looks like I was beat to it. :) I have to admit, I love a good kitchen gadget and have to limit my contraptions. I loved seeing an organization post - motivates me (at least a little).
I love the first picture. I truly am shocked that you would have that in your home. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside that you do....I mean did.
Love your organization tips. It is great.
3 rolling pins? So funny.
I have a canister thingy on my counter by my sink that hold my 20%
I learned years ago in an organization class that we would 80% of our stuff 20% of the time and 20% of our stuff 80% of the time. So I call that little cannister that holds my favorite spatulas and stirrers my 20%
Ok wait - All my measuring cup sets have 2/3 and 3/4 :-D I
Love your organization. I just plain don't have enough drawers in my kitchen. Maybe I can have someone come build me some new ones. I only have 4 regular sized drawers and 2 extra deep. I sure wish they were four separate drawers instead of 2 deep - wasted space - Ugh!!
I also have 2 full sets of silverware so that takes up two of my drawers right there.
My kitchen is a little crazy.
I need to do this with my drawer. Mine looks just like yours did before you organized it. I too have little cupboard space.
You did a fabulous job!
I agree with the magnet method. I shuddered at the sight of it.
Utensils are handy when needed but also take up a lot of space! Thanks for the tips. I need to go through my drawers. I did get ride of my old measuring cups not fancy tupperware ones like yours just walmart specials!
There's a drawer in my kitchen right now that I know needs some work! You de-cluttered very nicely!
Yeah, the knives on the wall scares me too. I do have two utensil crocks on the counter and they work really well for us.
I'm a fan of Downton Abbey too!
In my best Ann voice, all I can say is:
WHAT THE CRAP!!! ;)
This is NOT your kitchen...I don't care what you tell me, I just don't believe it ;)
I really need you here to help me w/ organizing ummm my whole house. I've let it get way out of control. I NEED you!!!
Keep these post coming, because I need the inspiration.
I love you.
((HUGS))
I thought you had taken a picture of MY drawer! Thanks for the tips, obviously I need them!
I love the vintage measuring cups!
I tackeled a lot today but couldn't find big bins to put the kids stuff in. Can you call me or email me the labels you have written on their bins. Do you remember where you got the bins?
Easy access for a serial killer!!! Haha!
You have a lot of kitchen gadgets and utensils. :) I love cooking and baking, but don't have nearly as many as you. That's okay in my tiny kitchen anyway.
Wow, what a great post! I love your tips.
I would love for you to share this on my link party this week. I know my readers will love this too! http://thriftmeblog.com/lets-organize-2012-kitchen-countertops-recap-link-party/

My drawer for utensils looks EXACTLY like yours does!! OOPS!! I'm so glad I scrolled through your posts and saw this...this is exactly what I needed to see to add order to my drawers...LOVE It!!
Can't wait to add that to my list to this week to once and for all get our gadget drawer organized!!
You are SO good at what you do...thanks for your great ideas on organizing!!
