I always loved playing the Game of "life" when I was little.
We LOVE games in our family... and this is a game that we do not currently own.. so Christmas was a good excuse to buy it.
Over Christmas break.. we opened it up to play -- and I was amazed at how much it had changed!
This game that I played when I was little-- now took us 3 hours to play -- trying to understand all of the new ways and rules. Crazy! -- But now that we had the hang of it... we decided to play it again last night for Family Home Evening.
We all had a good time... and it surprisingly taught my kids a little more about money and expenses.
In the games we have played... I always have a poor paying job... and hardly any money.. but yet I still want the Victorian house for $500.000.
Sounds like me eh?
After the game... we talked as a family about how the game is similar to real life... and how it's also not so similar to real life.
The kids were quite amazed to hear what our house cost ( compared to those on the board ) and even to hear what Dad's Salary was per month.
It's amazing how some things become "teaching tools" even when you don't plan it.
The kids were filled with questions.
********
As I got ready for bed last night...I started thinking about how grateful I was that my life doesn't consist of what I roll or spin. I am SUCH an unlucky girl... I would be in trouble.
One reason I won't ever gamble.
I am grateful that I can choose my own career... and car... and goals.
And like the board game... I move along and sometimes "luck" is not on my side...and I have to "pay out" with money or time.... but I can get through it.
As Chad and I were in bed talking about Life and the New Year...I asked him what his New Years Goals would be.
Almost everything on his list would be the same as mine.
Not so surprising.

I reviewed last years goals I had posted on my blog --and was pleasantly surprised that I had accomplished all but one.
It made me happy.
I can do this again. I can!!
So what are my main goals for 2012?
1- Get out of Debt
Chad and I used to follow Dave Ramsey so well.
And then we lost our job 3 times.. and we are still trying to catch up.
2- Read the Book of Mormon as a Family
This may sound easy for some of you...
but it is hard to stay on task with this -- for us all together daily.
This year... we are determined to do it.
3- Exercise 6 days a week
I NEED TO DO THIS.
At the beginning of last year... I was eating healthy.. exercising.. and doing physical therapy for my back.. and I felt FABULOUS. I lost 30 pounds.
Then... Dad got sick.. and I had to forget myself.
I haven't exercised much since Dad's death.
Kinda makes me ill.. and my body feels like an old Woman's.
I HAVE to do this. HAVE to for my Spine.
4- Eat less Meat
I have a husband that LOVES his Meat and potatoes.. but this year I am striving to feed my family well -- by eating more grains and beans and Vegetables and to eat meat more sparingly.
We are going to strive for Meat only 2-3 times a 7 day week.
This may sound like a lot.. but it's a huge cut back after our usual 7 days of Meat.
5- Be more Charitable
In December.. I tried to do some kind of Service each day.
It felt so good.
So... I am going to go bigger -- and try for this daily this year.
I hope to be closer to the spirit.. as others have for me.
I can do this!
I can! I can! I can!
* If you have a favorite meatless dish recipe .... please send it my way!*
Thanks!!!
Today I am Grateful for:
Organizing Season! Makes me happy!
Candy Cane Hot Cocoa = Love
Dinner with Mom & Grandpa and Grandma Tenney
Genuine Hugs

Gotta love a new year- a fresh start! Love your goals and hoping I can do many of the same things. Happy 2012!
Those are some great goals! I think the exercising one will help you with your situation with your dad. It will bring out those happy endorphin and you will have more energy. I know you will still be sad and miss him (how could you not) but you will feel good sense of accomplishment! This makes me happy!:) I know you can do these goals! Love you!
I tried to call you today to see how your New Year was. Call me when you get a chance.
You can do it. I can do it too. That is what I'm telling myself as I set some goals this week.
:)
So far I have about 27 meatless recipes that we like. I'm still planning and working on the new blog for them, hoping I can pull it off quickly, but life is SO crazy right now, it's hard to find time. Maybe I'll send you a list of the names of our recipes, and you can tell me which of them you'd like the real recipe on. That way you don't get a giant email of recipes you don't want. :)
You CAN do it!! I believe :-D
Love the start of a new year and fresh happy goals :-D
Love your goals. I do goals each year too!
We eat way to much meat at our house too.....WHAT do people eat, when they don't eat meat.????
I am with you also on the exercise plan.........I gotta loose weight and all my freaking belly fat. (where DID that come from)
I am reading "The Promised Messiah" by Bruce R. McConkies. (I want to read all 4 on this set.....may take me much longer then ONE year)
You will have no trouble being charitable...seems to come naturally to you. Everyone around you will be blessed from that goal.
I like how you can play games with children and have them learn something from it. Have a discussion on it. Excellent.
For you it seems like every season is organizing season. I bet you are NEVER unorganized!
I love the pictures of your family playing games! They are such beautiful kids.
I need to review my goals too! Maybe I did better than I thought.
I LOVE the game of life! AWESOME, and I love how you taught your kids along with playing, This is a great idea! I need to do this and I love you got all of your goals completed but one, as for the exercise I know what you mean- I am trying to do better about this. I was running before Trent died and ever since I just couldn't emotionally or physically do it. Happy New Year, I am thinking about ya! p.s. what non meat recipes can you share with me Ü
Great goals Ann! I love your blog! I need to be better with mine.. Happy New Year!!
Both games of Life can be exciting and frustrating! You have some good and achievable goals. So let it be written, so let it be done. Happy New Year!
Great goals. Many of your overlap mine. I mentioned the less meat one to my husband just yesterday.
Best wishes.
These are great goals. I love the eating meat less goal. We've started doing that in the last two years and I think it's a lot better way to eat, and many studies are showing that to be true, as long as you get your vitamins and other nutrients from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It also matches up with what the Word of Wisdom says, to eat meat sparingly.
I need to start working out again too. We need to treat our temples for what they are--the temples of our spirits!
Loved Life growing up too...although didn't it take 3 hours to play it then also. My cousin recommends Monopoly Jr, it also teaches kids how to use money.
Still working on my goals but most of yours are mine too.
good ambitious goals. i love them! we share the BofM goal with you guys this year. its waaaay exciting though to have this goal (one we've had before) this year, since mini-me's way more aware of scriptures in every aspect of her life now thanks to better emphasis of personal progress in YW now & a phenomenal seminary teacher! seems that mr. lkp is even more eager to read the BofM too. and that's big, because aside from his mission, he's not a big reader of anything unless its a trucker's ad paper or an aviation magazine. so this is all very very good. :) we'll be rootin' for you guys right along rootin' for ourselves. lol. especially through 2nd Nephi.
as for life, love that game. prefer the orignal version you & i are probably more familiar with. but still good to play. we've found the same with our girl that it's great for getting the mental wheels turning. :)
anyhow, love you! good luck on all of your goals. can't wait to see you in march. we're seeing you in march, right?
I've been finally catching up a little on blogs and reading everyone's resolutions. I didn't make any this year. Of course, I have plenty of things I want to work on, like always, but I'm just trying to get through life one day at a time right now. And it almost makes me feel good to read other people's lists and not have to think about things. :) But I'm wishing you a great year and I'm sure you'll do great on your list.
I LOVE your goals....I have many of the same ones. I love how honest you are with life!!
I'll send you an email with some links of various "little meat" or "meatless meals".
Here are two for now (although the Lentils post, needs updated with NEW photos that look better: http://pinkcookieswithsprinkles.blogspot.com/2011/02/versatile-yummy-beans.html

Part of the frugal life that we have lived for the past 20 years has always been about making up LOTS of soups with little meat and LOTS of veggies/grains.
I also enjoy making up a large batch of stir-fry with only 1 or 2 chicken breasts cut up, but LOTS of veggies: http://pinkcookieswithsprinkles.blogspot.com/search/label/chowmein%2Fstir-fry
Anywho, not sure if that is helpful or not! Once you get everyone used to less meat, it is amazing how you really won't miss it.
Here is my "no shopping challeng link" for 2011 and there is a lot of GREAT tips in there AND also links to recipes that may work for you.
