Organizing Under the Kitchen Sink

"Sometimes I get nervous-when I see an open door,

close your eyes-clear your heart-cut the cord."

~ The Killers

Organizing week.

Do you get nervous when a closet or cupboard door is left open?

Will someone see your "stuff"- your mess shoved in and out of the way?

Time to tackle it! One drawer and closet door at a time.

( I bet you'll always think of Organizing when you hear that line in the song now huh? )

I know... I'm a nerd.

How do you keep things under your kitchen sink?

This is how I do it.. This way may not be for you.. But that is what is so great about organizing.. You look at ideas, and adjust them to how things will work best for you and your space.
I prefer to buy plastic totes for ANYTHING under a sink.
Why?
1- They won't warp with water.
2-I can wash them out with a spill.
3- I am making better use of space.

Things need to be easily accessible. The totes that I use do not slide in and out. They stay where they are and I have it easily reachable for me. My dish soaps are in the basket to the right with liquid dish soap, jet dry etc.. It's important to measure the space you have before shopping for totes. With all of the pipes and tubes that are under the sinks, it can be tricky..
But you want to make the best possible use of your space.

I have only one plastic drawer underneath my kitchen sink. That is all I was in need of. I keep my gloves, scrubbers, and SOS pads in here. There is also many great little organizing systems that you can buy that will mount onto the door of the cabinets. Use what you like best.

You can see... I am a labeling crazy woman.

I have "labeled" where the dustpan and broom go.
My kitchen cleaning supplies are stacked nicely on the plastic drawer tote. If you are stacking different totes, always make sure at the store that they will fit together nicely.

Under some sinks you have the "dividing bar." ~ Again I don't slide it out, so it is OK. I also have stored there my house plant food that I don't get to often, so it is in a perfect place.
Notice I even labeled the totes handles. :)
Because there are poisonous products underneath the sink, it's always a good idea to put a child lock on your cupboards. Even if you don't have children, it will keep *little* guests, and animals from getting into things that would be very harmful to them.
Questions? Comments? What is under your sink? Please SHARE!
What's next? A whole week of organizing...

Hello Darling Ann,
Once again it's a pleasure to see your order. I realized yet, that my closets, cupboards and wardrobes are perfectly organized. Anyone could take a look at them at any time. I hate disorder in drawers or cupboards. I am more of the kind that tends to let things lie around, which have no fixed place. So, I always try to find a place for everything and to avoid needless stuff and I don't collect. I easily throw or give things away. I fancy to see more of your perfect household! Have a nice day. XO *Kerstin*

You have a lot more stuff under the sink than I do. I have a bin that holds my soaps and that's about it. I do need to go through and clean it out a little. I have little drawers in front of my sink that I put the pads and stuff.

HEY PS - I have been taking a room a week and cleaning out and organizing it. So far -Shae's room and her play room is done. *Pat on my back* So keep up the organization posts, I am on a role. -Suzanne

Ok, so I'm a nerd. I saw your label for the dust broom and it totally reminded me of my grandpa. He had a peg board up in his garage with the hooks that he would hang his tools on. But he didn't label them, he outlined them. So I half expected to see an outline of the dust pan. I had to stop on laugh for just a minute at the memory that this provoked. Thanks!

Kerstin- You are so kind to me.. You have left such kind words.. But my home is FAR from perfect. It's an older home, and we are remodeling it, and have invested alot of time and money into it..

I try and have an orderly home, and even though it is organized, I have learned/made a few mistakes.. In my classes I even show the mistakes I made and "what not to do" because you DON'T WANT IT TO LOOK LIKE THIS.."

My house is always a work in progress just like everyone else.. :)

Suzanne- Hearing that people are organizing SERIOUSLY makes me happy. I know it's sick.. but true. After I do a class-- when I see a person at the store or something and they tell me *what they have accomplished* it seriously makes my day. I want to see it!! If I get feeling better, I'll hopefully make it over this week!

Katie- I have seen alot of people do that in their work shops! (chad's dad )he-he!
I could totally see myself as an old person doing that to EVERYTHING in my house.. ha-ha J/K

Labeling Queen....only seven-teen, she can dance, she can jive, having the time of her life. =) hee,hee j/k

I love all of your small flower vases on your window seal. They are so pretty. Are the flowers real or fake? I bet in the summer they are real hun?

Once again you have given me the motivation to get to work on my house. You would DIE to see under my kitchen sink. It's pretty bad. I have a bunch of crap in there. I guess it's time to clean it out. I have like ten 1/2 burnt candles in there. I'll have to take before and after pictures for you to see.

ps. did you ever look up that house?

what did you think?

I LOOOVE your "organizing" posts. I am really a chaotic person wishing to get better organized. I WILL take you as my role model. But no photos from under my kitchen sink today - maybe later on.....
Regards from rainy Germany and thanks so much,
Angelika

You're an inspiration. Truly. My kitchen sink cupboard holds all that, but not NEARLY so nicely.

Ann,

I don't leave very many comments, even though I check your blog every day, because it seems like whenever I have something to say, someone has already said it. I start sounding like I have no original thoughts.

However, I just had to let you know that I love your organizing posts. I look forward to the day, that I am able to decorate and organize my home, just the way I want it. Right now we are concentrating so hard on finishing it, that I haven't spent a lot of time or money doing much else.

After we get our storage room, bedrooms and bathroom done in the basement, I get to start working on the remodel of the upstairs, then I can really get busy making it beautiful. Thanks again for sharing your home.

Love, Lydia

We only have the garbage under the kitchen sink and STILL it gets to be such a mess - the kids miss alot I think!
To me it is absolutely the most disgusting place to clean so I try to get someone else to do it - That's why we have kids right - ha ha J/K.
I love all of your organization. I just know I need to get some more baskets/containers like you have.
Between your organization tips and Sondra's cleaning tips we are all going to have the best looking houses!! I'm loving it!

This is one area that is pretty organized... but still not perfect! Mine is an odd space, since it's in a corner, and only has one door. It's hard to get things in and out and baskets don't line up because of the turns.... Just run on down and I'll show you! Someday I'll come up with a perfect soulution.

The "under the sink" cupboard is one thing that is pretty organised in this house. One of the few things LOL.
My little gift is on it's way. I hope it will arrive soon (or at least in time). Reading your last comment, I think you will enjoy it.
It is not just a bd present but also a little thank you for your kind words and your friendship.
Take care,
Marianne.

I loved it as usual. I have my garbage can under my sink with my kitchen supplies. Where do you have your garbage can? You crack me up with all your labeling - but I love it! Very tidy!

Cheri is really funny!!

I am sad to report I never got the chance to organize my storage at my parents. Kurt had a lot of work to do this weekend so he couldn't watch Ayla the whole day. This weekend is her birthday party. Did you get the invite? So I won't be doing it this weekend. Maybe the next.

I can't believe how organized you are. Your impressive.

Hi Ann,
Thank you so much for another great post! It was so sweet of you to show us underneath your kitchen sink...which I knew would be clean and organized!!! I always feel so energized after reading your blog and then I go and clean/organize something!

I TRULY think that someone should video tape you during your organizing classes and then you can sell it to your FANS on your blog :) I would be the first to purchase it!!!

I can't wait for "A Whole Week of Organizing"!

Thanks so much...Janel

If I do any more classes, it would have to be at the end of march after all of the busyness coming up!

Sondra- I will post where my garbage is just for you tomm! :)

Heather- DON'T GIVE UP!!!
Getting organized brings great satisfaction!!

Janel- I wish you had a blog.
You are so nice to me and I am flattered by your sweet words. It makes it worth doing these posts..
Even just thinking of being video taped makes my stomach hurt..

Natalie- You may want to come back next week. You are going to be so bored with my blog being organizing posts all week.

Misty- You would LOVE it! It is so fun, and soo you!! I am thinking Mother's day? I love my label maker from Costco! And my friend Monica found one on-line for $10.00!

Followed the link from AT. My guy & I are merging households, and the label-maker strikes me as a great idea as we try to figure out where things go!
